The Salt Doll

There was a salt doll who lived in the mountains. She was a curious little doll and loved to travel and explore. One day, she decided to embark on a long journey. She wandered through the dales, seeing new places and having all kinds of adventures. Then, she came to a place she had never seen before. It was the edge of the sea. She was fascinated by the surging mass of water.

“What are you?” she asked.

“Touch me, and you will find out,” the sea replied.

So the little salt doll dipped her toe into the sea. It felt so good! But when she withdrew her toe, it was no longer there!

“What have you done to me?” she cried.

“You have given something of yourself in order to know,” answered the sea.

The little doll remembered the lovely feeling and was curious to know the sea a bit better, so she dipped her foot. It felt so good! When she withdrew her foot, however, it was no longer there. In some inexplicable way, she felt very good about it. So she continued going further and further into the sea, losing more and more of herself, all the while understanding the sea more deeply.

As the wave broke over the last bit of her, the salt doll was able to cry out, “Now I know what the sea is.

It is I!”
